Shrewsbury Castle is a stronghold guarding the only way into Shrewsbury that was unprotected by the River Severn.
It was originally an Anglo-Saxon fortification built out of timber; the current sandstone castle being founded by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury in c.1070.
In 1138 it was unsuccessfully defended by William Fitzalan - a supporter of the Empress Maud - after an attack by the forces of King Stephen.
